General discussion of effects of several types of porosity on various strengths of concrete; relationship between strength and air content; fracture under various loading conditions; porosity of cement paste and strength; strength vs water-cement ratio; approximate formulas are presented which are obtained from proposition that change in water-cement ratio affects concrete strength through change in porosity of hardened paste; one of these formulas provides family of converging straight lines in "strength" vs "log (water-cement ratio)" system for comparable concretes of various ages.
