Prestressed concrete penstocks at benmore
Six penstocks at Benmore Hydroelectric Power station in New Zealand are 17 ft 6 in. in diam and are designed to resist water pressures up to 175 psi; for most of their lengths they are of prestressed concrete on 36° slope; they were precast in units 8 ft long weighing 58 tons; use of short 12-strand cables on 10-ft radius required investigation of pull-in and friction effects, while manufacture, handling, and placing of heavy units required development of special techniques and achievement of close tolerances; at pressure of 300 psi units cracked sufficiently to permit fine spraying, but they remained satisfactory at normal pressures.
