Progress report on application of neutron soil moisture meter to organic soil
Report is based on one year of field experience with neutron scattering device at Ontario Agricultural College Muck Research Station; principle of operation of instrument is based upon neutron moderation theory that fast neutrons lose kinetic energy in elastic collision with low atomic weight nuclei; in soils, hydrogen nuclei, found largely in water, constitutes nearly all low atomic weight nuclei; neutron count is integration of number of neutron collisions with hydrogen in free water, adsorbed or bound water, organic matter, hydroxyl ions in clay lattices and other minerals less number of thermal neutrons absorbed by boron, chlorine and other elements.
