Description is given of development and successful application at Bethlehem Steel Corp's open hearth plants, of basic roofs of bonded arch construction; design principles include minimum hot strength requirement for basic brick, expansion allowances that extend full roof thickness, structural members to control arch contour, and specified minimum roof rise; high stability of bonded roofs is explained in terms of basic stress patterns of ring construction and bonded construction.
