Stress distribution by model piles in sand
Stresses developed in sand when pile is pushed into it are of two kinds -- one is directly due to applied load and vanishes when load is taken off; other is displacement stress, developed by displacement of sand, which remains after load is removed; equivalent depth of application of load is equal to embedded length of pile when pile is pushed into sand; displacement stress in sand is influenced by distance between piles and by order of pile driving.
