Preloading results in tank foundation economies
Details of field investigation conducted in connection with design and control of site preloading program to permit use of shallow foundation pads for oil storage tank farm are described; site in question is underlain with highly compressible glacial lake deposits of varying thickness; settlements resulting from preload materials ranged from approximately 1.3 in. in northern end of site to as much as 20 in. in southernmost tank location; these settlements occurred quite rapidly, with maximum waiting period of less than 3 mo required.
