Before connecting of new intake tunnel to existing tunnel carrying water from crib in Lake Michigan, Chicago department of public works bulkheaded water tunnel at shore shaft and unwatered portion between shaft and crib; as safeguard against contamination of city's water supply by tremie concrete placed in bulkhead, dams were built on both sides of shaft; dams confined tremie concrete and eliminated danger of dissipating cement into city's water system.
