Experiences gained in sinking open caissons through sand islands for Mississippi River bridge at Baton Rouge, La, leads to useful conclusions on erosion hazards, friction bond, water jet action and weighting; soundest method of ensuring accident-free work appears to be caisson and cofferdam design that provides for weighting.
