Cruachan pumped storage scheme is major part of Awe project of North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board; power station lies below ground in series of cavern excavated from solid rock over 1000 ft below surface; project includes high level dam, situated in valley on Ben Cruachan, impounding reservoir; when generating, water will be discharged through common tailrace tunnel to outfall situated on northern bank of Loch Awe; capacity will be 400 Mw, provided by 4 pump-turbine sets.
