Soil mechanics aspects of red river floodway
Floodway will be 30-mi long diversion channel in Lake Agassiz lacustrine clays, designed to protect Greater Winnipeg area against future flooding; main soil engineering design problem was selection of slopes for diversion channel which would have long term stability; 2 general methods of investigation are study of inclination of natural river banks in Winnipeg area and field stability studies of slopes in freshly excavated trench; design slope of 6 horizontal to 1 vertical for most of Floodway should be stable.
