Shoring topples at building site
Report of collapse of 80-ft-long section of shoring into 30-ft excavation for underground parking garage; accident was attributed to undetected leaking water from nearby sewer or water main that probably built up hydraulic head for which shoring was not designed; shoring consisted of vertical soldier beams at 7 ft 9 in., 4-in. timber lagging, two lines of wales, braced at every third soldier beam by two rakers; all connections were welded; soldier beams were made up of 12 BP53 sections driven to refusal, at least 5 ft below excavation grade; offset readings taken daily showed no movement of walls through day preceding collapse.
