Dispersion and flushing of pollutants in estuaries
Fate of pollutant introduced into estuary is shown to depend on relative density of effluent and receiving water, vertical density structure of estuary, strength of tidal currents, non-tidal circulation pattern, and intensity of turbulent diffusion; numerical solutions to time dependent theoretical advection-diffusion equations are used to describe probable distribution of pollutant in tidal segment of estuary centered on outfall; exchange of pollutant between tidal segments in estuary and ultimate flushing of pollutant from estuary are treated by using two-dimensional segmented mathematic model of estuary.
