Shape of pavilion for Blossom Music Center, summer home of Cleveland Symphony, grew out of functional requirements for acoustics and sight lines; shell of pavilion has shape of truncated cone; it follows fan-shaped plan of seating and tilts from high point 94 ft above stage floor to perimeter opening, which varies from 25 ft at center to 15 ft at sides; heights were determined by acoustical and sight-line requirements; roof is supported by single-plane pipe trusses, which in turn are supported at one end by tipped steel arch-girder and at other end by column-supported girder located 25 ft from perimeter; steel columns are stressed by axial load and biaxial moment gradient.
