Foundation of "La Placette" department store in Geneva; 100×60 m building is 28 m high over-ground and 24 m deep underground; prior to excavation, 31 m deep enclosure was bentonite-grouted around building site and 30 provisory reinforced concrete foundation piles were sunk to enable both over- and underground steel framework to be constructed simultaneously with excavation work; after completion of framework, cast steel columns of 18 to 36 cm diam were driven between piles down to foundation level and were joined with frame; using hydraulic jacks, frame was raised to detach it from piles which were demolished after concreting of floor slabs. (n 8 Apr 20 1968 p 105-14, n 9 May 4 p 121-33) (02406)
