Fractographic research into variations in fractures of 38KhMYuA steel when overheated; overheating of Cr-Mo-Al steel before quenching or normalizing causes reduction of impact strength, while fractures at first become of mixed type, then brittle-naphthalinic (fracture through pearlite grains) or lithoidal (fracture along boundaries between austenite grains); mean dimensions of crystal facets increase greatly and amount to 10 to 12 μm if steel has been correctly treated and fracture is entirely fibrous; this quantity can be used as criterion of overheating steel; holding time exerts effect along same lines as temperature.
