Soft rock exploration with pressure equipment
New instrument, developed for in-situ testing of soil and soft rock, consists of combination volumeter-manometer connected to cylindrical bore-hole expansion device; probe is constructed of steel tube surrounded by two flexible rubber membranes, interior membrane forming measuring cell and exterior providing guard cells at ends of probe; guard cell is activated by gas pressure and is used to reduce end effects on measuring cell to provide essentially two-dimensional condition; application of pressure meter equipment for soil testing in Castaic Surge Chamber within California Aqueduct and Stokes Canyon Tunnel near Los Angeles is described.
