Calculation of plane parallel deformation processes in dry sand; reasons for unsatisfactory results yielded in this calculation by theory of plasticity are investigated; attempt at applying continuum mechanics leads to suggestion that stress tensor could be considered as useful measure of actual contact forces acting between sand particles; use of deformation tensor, however, seems dubious; further experiments are needed to validate theory proposed.
