Assessing deformability of rock at bottom of vertical bore; sedimentary rocks, associated with mineral extraction, come into state of geostatic equilibrium following their deposition; owing to stress relaxation, state of stress of rock regarded as hydrostatic; in hydrostatic phenomena liquids and solids behave as if they were ideally elastic; cutting of excavation in rock will cause stresses; paper presents mathematical analysis of those stresses in order to determine critical value of pressure beneath bit at which structure of rock changes from elastic to plastic, requiring more energy to be cut.
