Two full-scale experiments were carried out to examine simultaneously design of sealing groove and performance of various joint-sealing compounds on lengths of road with different joint layouts; joint spacing ranged from 28 ft to 80 ft to give varying amounts of extension of jointing material; initial joint width ranged from 1/2 to 1 1/4 in. and width/depth ratios ranged from 1/2 to 2; two hot-poured bituminous compounds and two cold-poured pitch-modified polysulfide compounds were used; periodic measurements of joint movements and surveys of sealant failure were made for about 2 yr.
