Fatigue tests or prestressed concrete pavements
Fatigue characteristics of prestressed concrete pavements were studied by repetitive moving load tests on 16 reduced scale prestressed concrete slabs; each slab was 16 ft long, 12 ft wide, and 1 in. thick; variables were magnitude of load, amount of longitudinal and transverse prestress, and subgrade strength; relationships were established between load magnitude, prestressed pavement properties, and number of load coverages causing failure; data from tests on slabs with varying magnitudes of prestress indicate that minimum prestress of approximately 30 psi in both longitudinal and transverse directions is required to avoid top surface cracking.
