Stability of cohesive soils behind vertical openings in sheet pile walls
Theoretical calculations and field observations showed that failure in stability of clay mass located behind vertical opening in sheet pile wall may occur when ratio of total overburden pressure and undrained shear strength of soil at opening is 6 to 8; failure in which approximately 30 cu m of clay flowed through vertical opening at bottom of sheet pile wall is analyzed; study indicates that even very small openings in sheet pile wall can cause extensive damage under unfavorable conditions in deep excavations in soft soils.
