Two-yr program to study and demonstrate improved sanitary landfill compaction was initiated at Coffin Road landfill of Santa Clara, Calif; site is located in area of low-lying land where soil is predominantly clayey and silty sand; it is normal cut-and-cover operation, varying in depth from 10 to 20 ft; compaction procedures, density determination and equipment operation are discussed; formulas for density calculations and data on density of landfill cells.
