Valley shape factor in arch dam design
Choice between gravity or buttress and arch-type dam is governed by shape of valley, with arch obtaining greater advantage as valley narrows down; use of arch factor is presented which provides standard for evaluation of sites of widely different form; volume of concrete in standard arch is standard measure against which efficiency of particular design may be judged.
