Terrephragm underground walling system
In new construction system, underground walls are cast with concrete in trenches previously excavated by deep trenching machine through chemical mud, which retains earth walls without aid of timbering or sheet piling; method is illustrated by construction of heavily reinforced concrete wall, 32 in. thick, 56 ft deep, and about 175 ft long which lies between existing railway bridge abutment and brick tunnel alongside busy intersection; main feature of deep trenching machine is trenching face shovel, which travels up and down mobile vertical mast which in turn runs up and down fixed mast at forward end of structural steel base frame operating on tubular rails.
