Economic advantages of ultimate-strength design
Eight combinations of materials and design methods were compared for 10-story building with 8 in. flat-plate concrete floor system and 20 ft column bay, with light apartment loading, to illustrate possible differences in cost within one concrete system, due to use of different materials and design procedures; saving of 35 to 45 cents/ sq ft could be obtained with ultimate strength design method using A432 steel and light weight concrete; results of comparison tabulated.
