Formulas based on theory of fracture and Rejtoe's theory of "internal friction" are derived for collapse load of columns with height-to-radius ratio higher than 3.5 but not exceeding 20; theoretical results are in good agreement with experimental data; formulas are not valid for higher H/R ratios, where buckling must be taken into account.
