Bridge consists really of 2 separate parallel "fly-overs", crossing number of roads, railway and Yarra River; it is curved in both plan and elevation and each fly-over consists of concrete deck supported by 4 lines of parallel plate girders alternating between cantilever and suspended spans; section which collapsed was at beginning of bridge at its lowest elevation and was shrouded by walls; collapse resulted from brittle fracture in 4 girders; fractures are shown in photographs, and are described with reference to type of failure, steel used, etc.
