Preliminary sub-surface investigation of Chesapeake bay crossing
Major portion of bridge-tunnel project crossing lower Chesapeake Bay consists of trestle over shallow water; structure consists of 825 precast, prestressed concrete spans of 75 ft each supported on 54 in. diam prestressed cylindrical concrete piles; tunnels are constructed under each of 2 major ship channels; tunnel structures consist of prefabricated concrete tubes 37 ft in diam and 300 ft long; ends of tunnels are founded on artificial islands.
