Riddle of shear failure and its solution
Internal mechanism of shear failure of reinforced beam, and strength of this mechanism are studied; analysis of structural system revealed that as long as capacity of concrete teeth is not exceeded, beam-like behavior governs, and after resistance of concrete teeth is destroyed, tied arch, having quite different properties, remains; for both mechanisms simple analytical expressions were developed; tests carried out at University of Toronto, Ont, on several series of reinforced concrete beams confirmed theory.
