Construction begins on Glen Canyon Dam
700 ft dam will be concrete arch structure having volume of 4,770,000 cu yd, crest length of 1500 ft, and thickness at base of 300 ft; dam will create reservoir of 28,000,000 acre ft extending 186 mi up Colorado River and 71 mi up San Juan River; storage units will have reservoir capacity of 34,500,000 acre ft and installed generating capacity of 1,100,-000 kw; water will be provided to irrigate 130, 000 acres of land.
