Case of 'burning' trestle that refused to burn
Tests on Santa Fe indicate that self extinguishing characteristics can be provided for timber bridges by adding fire retardant chemical to commonly used wood preserving solutions; bridge timbers treated with 12 lb per cu ft of creosote petroleum mixture containing 13.5% by weight of triphenyl phosphate derivative demonstrated fire retardency and resistance to flame spread at about 1500 F. (See also Ry Age v 142 n 21 May 27 1957 p 34-6)
