Creosoted pile foundations in Burlington, Iowa
Structures completed in 1944 were new depot and office building erected by Burlington Railroad and viaduct constructed by Iowa State Highway Dept to carry traffic over tracks of Burlington Railroad and Osburn Street; structures were founded on creosoted piles; column foundations of depot are supported by 288 wood piles 16 to 24 ft long, pressure treated with 14 lb of creosote per cu ft; 500-ft viaduct was founded on 266 creosoted piles 30 ft in length.
