Deterioration of concrete dams due to alkali-aggregate reaction
Expansive reaction between aggregate and high alkali cement has been found responsible for random cracking and deterioration of concrete of large number of dams; aggregates that have been found to react with high alkali cement include opaline silica, highly siliceous rocks and acid to intermediate volcanic rocks. (see also - discussion n 7 Sept 1945 p 1089-1110, n 10 Dec p 1556-8)
