Swelling and loads on steel supports in solfataric clay (Onsenyodo) in new Tanna tunnel
Large quantity of water and heavy ground pressure causing difficulties during tunnel excavation were studied, and in order to pass area, method was adopted in which pilot tunnel was to be bored to confirm geological conditions prior to tunnel excavation; observation tunnel with breadth of 1.5 m and height of 2 m was excavated from pilot tunnel in search of phenomena of ground pressure including swelling displacement and load on steel supports.
