To original 4 1/2-mi north-south line, further 10-mi section is being added, running east-west with short north-south branch; 3 different methods are being employed depending on local conditions; "cut-and-cover" conventional method; "Milan" method, which eliminated pile driving, and temporary shoring of side walls, third method, tunneling, was used because of silty nature of soil, which might undermine nearby buildings and cause caving of workings.
