Investigation carried out at Univ of Western Australia is reported; various types of sands and pavements encountered in area, and application of common design procedures used for determining pavement thicknesses are described; results of plate bearing tests on laboratory scale, together with plate bearing and wheel load tests on full scale test pavement, are analyzed; no advantage seen in increasing pavement thickness beyond 5 or 6 in.; Perth pavements 6 in. thick should be able to support 15,000 lb wheel loads; for greater load carrying capacity, improved quality of paving materials is needed.
