Punching tests on disks of rock under hydrostatic pressure
Experiments have been made on marble, slate, and sandstone; they give approximate value for variation of shear strength with confining pressure; for marble and slate, confining pressure has considerable strengthening effect, but for sandstone this effect is relatively small; method is applicable to number of situations not covered by triaxial test; when both methods are applicable, there are considerable differences between results obtained.
