Failure of rock in triaxial shear test
Study of rock failure phenomena as it occurs in high pressure triaxial shear tests; more than 160 tests of limestone, marble, granite and sandstone were conducted, employing lateral pressures of zero to 10,000 psi and independently controlled pore pressures of zero to 5000 psi; failure surfaces were examined using photomicrographs; confining pressures influence failure mode; angle of slip is closely predicted by Mohr criterion, and additional parameter, "fracture interference", may be included in shear strength equation.
