1000g centrifuge for rock research
Investigation into problems of rock-stress in deep-level mining at South African research institute has shown that rock bursts seem to be related to configuration of fracture zone which surrounds mining excavations in hard rock at depth; equipment developed for two aspects of this work include polariscope for photoelastic study of rock-stress problems, by application of tensile or compressive loads to models made of brittle materials; second is large centrifuge which simulates gravitational forces in mine models up to 70 lb in weight to acceleration forces of as much as 1000 their own weight.
