Full-scale pavement design experiment on A.1 at Alconbury Hill, Huntingdonshire
Construction and performance over 6 yr of experimental flexible and concrete pavements on London-Edinburgh trunk road are described; daily commercial traffic is 4000 vehicles, in both directions; in flexible construction behavior of wet-mix slag, lean concrete soil cement, open-textured tar-macadam, and rolled asphalt was compared under rolled-asphalt and open-textured bitumen-macadam surfacings; flexible sections have sub-base of single size fine sand; for concrete pavements variables under investigation are thickness of slab, thickness and type of base, amount of reinforcement, and strength of concrete.
