Longest elevated road in Europe
Design and construction of Chiswick-Langley Special Road that provides 25 mi of limited access highway through West London; elevated dual roadway is carried on precast, prestressed concrete beams each 54 ft 10 in. long and with 35 beams to each span; use of factory-made beams of two standard sections for decking -- U-section edge beams each weighing 20 tons, and T-sections for roadway spans weighing 7 1/2 tons; their use simplified erection and reduced congestion on limited area available at site; each deck beam rests on Andre rubber bearing pads 3/4 in. thick at fixed ends and 2 1/2 in. thick at free ends; calculated movement is plus or minus 1/ 4 in.; rubber bearings are wedge shaped on super-elevated sections of road.
