Developments in flexible road construction during period from early 1950's to 1964 are covered; sub-soil and surface water drainage curbs, sub-bases, bases, base-courses and surfaces are dealt with; importance of drainage and part played by sub-base in drainage and road structure is stressed; search for reliable and economical base is described and process of development from dry stone, through wet-mix and lean concrete to dense bituminous bases, is discussed; sampling and testing of bituminous products.
