Savvy smooths erection of 427-ft cable roof
Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum arena seating 15,000 people, is enclosed by 76-ft long diagonal columns intersecting at mid-height to form 56-ft high trussed ring; columns support peripheral compression ring as well as window wall that encloses arena; roof has single layer of cables, weighted by precast concrete I-sections to stabilize it against flutter, and 260-ft diam steel-framed penthouse containing mechanical and electrical equipment; casting of compression ring, stringing of 96 prestressed cables and erection and placing of 90-ft long precast halves of I-beams on cables with new 140-ton truck-mounted Manitowoc crane, are given.
