Model evaluation of soil factors affecting rigid pavement pumping
Laboratory model was devised to simulate pumping of 8-in. non-reinforced rigid pavement under 9000-lb wheel load traveling 14 mph; model pumping action was observed to be soil erosion phenomenon, and theoretical approach indicated soil cohesion as key factor; tests on several fine-grained soils at different temperatures and different compacted densities verified that pumping rate without drainage is inversely proportional to soil cohesion.
