Identification of concrete aggregates exhibiting frost susceptibility -- Interim report
Search was made for tests that would rapidly and reliably identify aggregate particles subject to destructive volume change when frozen in concrete; test methods investigated included evaluation of pore characteristics, aggregate particle expansion, petrographic examination, and Powers freeze-thaw test; significant correlation was found between ratio of porosity to average permeability coefficient and rapid freeze-thaw durability factor; expansion of individual aggregate particles during freezing correlated with rapid freezethaw durability factors and with dilation of concrete specimens containing aggregates.
