Linear domain of composite viscoelastic materials
Filled asphalts used in construction of highway and airfield pavements are examples of class of composite materials consisting of about 80% by volume of filler in viscoelastic matrix; need for rational experimental programs to justify application of linear viscoelastic theory to design problems is discussed; examples of envelopes of linear viscoelastic behavior for hypothetical composite materials under each of four modes of loading; experimentally determined limits of linear domain of asphalt concrete are used to illustrate some of problems involved with real composite materials.
