Progress at Mangla
Construction progress in diversion of Jhelum River and Mangla dam project for combined power and irrigation scheme; dam will be earthfill structure 11,000 ft long at crest, 380 ft high above lowest foundation, and contain 83 million cu yd of fill; to cope with flood problem it was decided to use five 30 ft diam tunnels ultimately destined to pass power and irrigation water as diversion tunnels and to construct stilling basin 85 ft deep at tunnel outlet portals; another unusual feature is provision to enable erection of machinery to proceed in powerhouse while diversion is in progress; three 100 Mw vertical Francis generating sets are being installed in first instance.
