Planning slopes in shale and other rocks
In reviewing properties of shales, it is found that they vary through complete spectrum of rock properties from weak, yielding materials to strong, elastic, brittle materials; case histories reviewed support orientation that peculiar properties of some shales of decrepitation and swelling exposure might be considered as reactions affecting long-term strength of material; it is suggested that for planning of slopes in shales and other rocks, practical procedure is to concentrate on monitoring deformation rather than analyzing stress; subject is treated under headings of design -- types of slope failure, classification of shales, case histories, and planning.
