Cylindrical unit employed looks like caisson, but had no bottom closure, and its walls are provided with vertical holes of circular section extending entire height of unit; amount of preliminary dredging is substantially less than that for construction of conventional block or caisson wall; cylinders can be made to penetrate farther into ground by excavation of soil within vertical holes in their walls; cylinder wall itself is designed to sufficient thickness so as to ensure adequate strength of structure despite reduction of effective cross-sectional area in consequence of vertical holes.
