Prestressed concrete pressure vessels for nuclear power stations
Design and construction of pressure vessel for inclusion in Nuclear Power Group's tender for station at Oldbury, England; vessel is vertical cylinder of 77-ft ID and 60-ft internal height; cylinder wall is 15 ft thick and end slabs 22 ft thick; vessel is constructed of high strength concrete, using limestone aggregate and sulfate resisting cement to give minimum cube strength of 6000 psi at 28 days; it is shown that prestressed concrete provides solution to problem when practical considerations in steel construction limit size of vessels and coolant gas pressure.
